Update for 10/24

       Dear Parents,

This Friday we will be having both 3.1 and 3.2 math tests.  Please check your child's agenda and have him/her review three times on iReady math.  A review handout went home today - please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

We have started our Adaptations unit in Science and your student needs to watch the "Camouflage" and "Migration" videos and take the related quizzes on Brain Pop.  The students started presenting their animal poster projects today and did a fantastic job, both as presenters and as audience members!

In Writing, we are revising our informational writing pieces and adding statistics, anecdotes, charts, graphs, and glossaries.

Today in Reading we had a wonderful visit from the Sandy Springs Education Force.  They read The Cello of Mr. O about a village in Sarajevo during the conflict of the 1990's and the students asked excellent questions, then worked on responding to the story with writing and pictures.  We also listened to Bach's Cello Suite Number 1 in G and they were even able to try out making music on a real cello!

As always, thank you for all of your support!!

Update for 10/16

       Dear Parents,

ITBS testing begins Monday, 10/17 and will be every morning through Friday, 10/21 for 3rd grade.  There is nothing your student needs to study for this test, but please make sure he/she is well rested and has had a good breakfast with protein (eggs, bacon, peanut butter on toast).  We will only be giving the "Getting Out the Vote" PBL survey sheet for homework next week.  Students only need to be asking relatives and any other grown ups you approve two questions:  Are you registered to vote?  and Are you planning on voting?

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  As always, thanks for your support!!

Habitats Study Guide

Habitats Study Guide

Vocabulary to know:

Environment – the living and nonliving things around a living thing

Ecosystem – where living and nonliving things interact

Habitat – the part of an ecosystem where a living thing lives (survives)

Mountain – a high, raised part of Earth

Piedmont – the region of Georgia that contains rolling hills

Coastal plain – an area between the piedmont and Atlantic Ocean

Wetland – a place where the soil is often wet and spongy

Drought - a long period of time with no rain

Balance – an environment with not too many or not too few of any living thing

Questions:
What things can change an environment? Fire, plants, rain

What does a habitat provide for animals?

Which part of Georgia has many mountains?

Name some plants and animals that are ONLY in one habitat in Georgia.

What do you predict a hurricane would affect an ecosystem?

How are the coastal plain and mountains the same and different? (compare

and contrast)

What would happen to the animals in an ecosystem if there was too little food

or water?

They would move (migrate) to another ecosystem/habitat. However, if they

could not find one that they matched their adaptations, they might die.
