Update for 8/31

Dear Parents,

Please come to Curriculum Night tomorrow (9/1) at 6:00 or 6:45 to find out more about our classroom procedures and the topics we will be studying this year with your student!  When you sign your child's agenda tonight, you will see that we will need posters for our Roots of Democracy project by this Wednesday if you can.  Your student will be working with a partner in class creating this project for the next few days.  Also, we have a Week 3 math handout that is due Thursday.  Below are the instructions for the poster project that we will be working on in class:

                                                    Names____________________

SS3G1.c: Poster

Your teacher has asked you and your partner to design an informational poster entitled “Roots of Our Democracy.” Your teacher has requested that the poster board be divided into 3 sections.

The first section should include an illustration of the three branches of government, a description of each branch, as well as titles of jobs held within each branch. The branches should contain titles and a description of the duties of the three branches.

The second section should contain illustrations and labels of buildings in Washington, D.C. that show the Greek influence of architecture in those buildings. You should explain how our government buildings design is connected to ancient Greece.

The third section will have a map of the world (the teacher will give you a blank map). The map should have Greece, the equator, Prime Meridian, lines of latitude, and lines of longitude labeled. The teacher would like for you to design a model of the bulletin board on poster paper. Be prepared to present your bulletin board to the class and include an explanation of why the separation of branches exists. You should make your poster colorful, informative, and eye catching!!

Update for 8/23

 Dear Parents,

I enjoyed seeing so many of you at the picnic on Friday, although I can't say I enjoyed all the dunking quite as much!  :)  The other 3rd grade teachers and I were pretty sore on Saturday from climbing out of the dunk tank dozens of times, but we're glad the kids got such a kick out of the experience.

Hopefully your student has been showing you his/her agenda nightly and getting you in the habit of signing the bottom of each day's assignment section.  We will continue using the agenda all year long to build the skill of staying organized in your students and to keep you informed.  If you ever have questions, feel free to write a note in the agenda or e-mail me at magisgraves@fultonschools.org

Our upcoming Democracy quiz on Tuesday will cover the vocabulary in your student's journal (community, citizen, law, democracy), the three branches of each level of government (national/federal, state, and local), how our separation of powers makes our government special, and the ideas we borrowed from ancient Greece (the idea of democracy even though theirs was a direct democracy and ours is representative, the Olympics to celebrate our spirit and competition, and columns on our government buildings to honor Greece).  We will have a Jeopardy-style review in class tomorrow and I will send home the journals for the students to review one more night.  Please help them remember to bring their journals back in on Tuesday!  Thanks in advance for your support!!

Our Curriculum Night will be on Tuesday, 9/1.  There will be two sessions so that parents with more than one student can see each student's classroom.  We will review our classroom procedures and inform you about the curriculum we will be teaching your students this year.  Feel free to e-mail me beforehand if you have any burning questions.

Finally, I wanted to let you know that the county is having issues with our new e-mail Office 365 system.  Some parent e-mails are going to our Junk Folders and others are coming through hours or days later.  We are diligently checking our Junk Folders to make sure we are not losing your e-mails, but I wanted to make you aware of this issue.  Hopefully it will be resolved soon!

Queridos padres,

  Dear Parents,

I hope you have seen that our students now have agendas so that they can keep track of assignments and homework.  Hooray!!  Please help them stay organized by checking and signing their agenda nightly.  Learning how to be organized is a life skill your student will benefit greatly from in 3rd grade and beyond.  So far we are off to a great start, but we did have a couple of students leave their agendas at home.  Please help them make sure they bring it to school each day so you can stay informed.  :)

In Social Studies, our I CAN statement is:  I can explain how our government is divided into three branches and why this separation of powers is important.  In Math, our I CAN statement for this week is:  I can use place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

Also, today our first homework handout went home.  It is Math on one side and L.A. on the other and is not due back until Friday.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Lastly, if your student has not brought in a pair of earphones or earbuds, please try to send those in ASAP.  The students will need them when we are in the computer lab, for iReady, and on the ipads.  Having their own will help us stay sanitary as well as motivate our students to take very good care of them.  Thank you for all of your support!!

Queridos padres,

    Dear Parents,

What a great start your students are off to!  We have gotten to know each other with some ice breakers, begun organizing our Science/Social Studies and Math journals, started our first vocabulary notes for our Democracy unit, and had our first pre-test in Math.  For the next week, our Social Studies "I CAN" statement is:  I can find Greece on a map and explain how ancient Greece was a model for the U.S. government.  For Math, our statement is:  I can fluently add and subtract within 1,000.

At home if your student is able, he/she can login to www.brainpop.com and review the videos on Athens, Democracy, Voting, and the Olympics.  Also, your student can work on iReady  to review for Reading and Math (lunch number and date of birth).

Thank you for all of your support!  Please let me know if you have any questions.  :)

     Dear Parents,

It was wonderful to meet so many of you at Sneak Peek on Thursday!  I'm soooo excited about this year and the opportunity to teach Social Studies, Science, and Math to your fabulous students!!  On Monday we will be organizing supplies - if you haven't had a chance to bring your child's in yet, anytime on Monday would be great to drop them off.  Thanks in advance!

I wanted to let you know that we flip-flop between Social Studies and Science in 3rd grade and we will be beginning with our Democracy unit in Social Studies.  In Math we start off with addition and subtraction to 1,000, place value, and rounding.  We will be doing some formatives this week to determine each student's starting point that we will build on.

You are allowed to walk your students to class this week, but we are asking that you hold off on eating lunch with your student until after the first two weeks of school.  We will be getting our routines and procedures in place as well as reviewing our P.A.W.S. behavior rules with the students.  (You probably have seen the posters in the hallway: P is for polite, A is for accountable, W is for working together, and S is for safety.)  Also, please remember that any changes in dismissal need to be communicated to me through e-mail and to the front office by 1:30 so that we can ensure that your child gets home safely.  :)

Thank you in advance for all of your support this year!!!
