Dear Parents,
We will be having our 3rd grade musical "Dig It" this Friday, 10/2 from 8:45 to 9:45. Please remind your student to review the songs and lyrics on the CD and handouts that Ms. Badovinac sent home. In Science, we are finishing up our Habitats unit and will be having the test on Friday. Your student will be bringing home his/her journal to review the vocabulary (environment, mountain, piedmont, coastal plain, wetland, balance, drought, flood) and notes. Also, I will be sending home the textbook on Wednesday if you would like to review Chapter 7 with your student. Your student can go into Mackinvia on the Spalding Media Center webpage and review the related Brain Pop videos as well. Thanks for your support!

Update for 9/20
Dear Parents,
We have finished up our Democracy unit and the students did a very nice job presenting their “Roots of Democracy” posters!! We have moved into learning about the Habitats of Georgia (Mountain, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Wetlands, and Atlantic Ocean) in Science. The students have done two investigations in class – one about predictions and how sometimes our predictions are incorrect, but that we always learn something anyway (Shapes of Bubbles) and one investigating the living and nonliving things in our school garden. We discussed how scientists always record their data so they can remember their investigations and so others can learn from their knowledge.
In Math, we will be moving into multiplication and division. We have started exploring how multiplication is simply repeated addition and how to represent multiplication using arrays (visuals). Next, we will begin to explore how multiplication and division are related, inverse operations. Our ultimate goal beyond these understandings is that your child will be able to fluently multiply and divide within 100. Your support will help your student learn his/her multiplication facts more quickly – thank you for helping your student practice for 10 minutes nightly.
Please have your student work regularly on iReady and IXL in Math to keep reviewing these skills. Currently in class we will be working on E.1-E.8 and G.1-G.20.
Thanks in advance for your support! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Social Studies textbook and resources online link!
Dear Parents,
I'm excited to let you know that you now can access our class Social Studies textbook and related resouces online! To access Social Studies digital resources students should visit:
https://secure.eservices.eduplace.com/eservicesadmin/login.do?targeturl=/eservices/
For your child's username and password, please e-mail me!
Unfortunately our access to the online Science textbook has expired. The state of Georgia is currently going through a revision of science standards with anticipated completion date of summer 2016. We will be going through the adoption of science materials next school year. The STEM department is in the process of finding online supplementary resources for elementary science.
Thanks for your support!!

Recycling Drive
Good Morning!
We are kicking off a Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge today!
Spalding Drive will be competing against other North Fulton County
schools to collect the most plastic bags (including newspaper wraps, cereal box
inserts, etc). The school that collects the most per student will win a
TREX park bench made from recycled plastic bags!
There will be a collection bin up front (when it gets delivered!!)
and we will distribute collection bags for your rooms! In the meantime,
you can send the plastic bags that students bring in to Ms. Fenoglio in the media center.
Stay tuned! More to come!!

Update for 9/7
Dear Parents,
Signed papers are going home tomorrow, 9/8. Please review them with your child and sign and return by the end of the week. Thanks in advance!
We are finishing up our Democracy unit
although students will continue to learn about Paul Revere and the American
Revolution in Ms. Borrelli’s reading class.
Next, we are moving into learning about the Habitats of Georgia
(Mountain, Piedmont , Coastal Plain, Wetlands, and Atlantic Ocean ). Your student
has already had an introduction to habitats in the STEAM lab where students
paired up and took photos of habitats around the school on our iPads, then
added text and other information using the app ThingLink. The kids thought it was so cool and did a
great job!
In
Math, we are finishing up Unit 1 in which we have explored place value and
rounding, adding and subtracting three-digit numbers, graphs, measurement to
the nearest inch, ½ inch, and ¼ inch, and strategies for solving two-step word
problems. Ask your student about being a
detective and solving word problems using some of the “clue” words that let us
know whether we will add or subtract to solve.
Please have your student work regularly on iReady and IXL in Math to
keep reviewing these skills!! Our Unit 1
Math test is scheduled for Wednesday, 9/16.
Next in Math, we will be moving into
multiplication and division. We will
start by understanding that multiplication is simply repeated addition and how
to represent multiplication using arrays (visuals). We will then explore how multiplication and
division are related, inverse operations.
Our ultimate goal beyond these understandings is that your child will be
able to fluently multiply and divide within 100. Your support will help your student learn
his/her facts more quickly – you can get some flashcards from the Dollar Tree
to help your student practice for 10 minutes nightly.
Thanks in advance for your support! Please let me know if you have any questions
or concerns.

Update for 9/3
Dear Parents,
This week we have been focusing on the following in Social Studies and Math: I can explain why the government is divided into three branches and give examples of some of the responsibilities of each branch of government. I can interpret and create graphs to show my data and measure to the nearest inch and half inch.
Some wonderful resources for your student to review on over the next few weeks are: Brain Pop videos on Democracy, Three Branches of Government, Latitude and Longitude, Voting, Athens, U.S. Constitution, Supreme Court, Presidential Power, How a Bill Becomes a Law. Also, Brain Pop has incredible review games such as: Executive Command, Supreme Decision, Law Craft, Checks and Balances, Branches of Government, Do I Have a Right?, and Argument Wars. I promise you that your student will learn and deepen their understanding of our amazing government as they play!!
Another great resource for kid-friendly information on how our government works is: http://bensguide.gpo.gov/a-legislative
In Math, students can continue to review on iReady and IXL. Anything related to addition, subtraction, place value, rounding, measurement to the inch and 1/2 inch, and graphing will reinforce what your child is learning in class. IXL lesson B.1-B.9, C.1-C.7, D.1-D.5, M.1-M.4, and R.3 are the most relevant.
Thank you so much for all of your support!!

Queridos padres,
